Screening program for early detection of breast cancer
Screening is an examination of women without symptoms of the disease, in order to detect breast cancer in its preclinical stage. Early detection of breast cancer prolongs a woman’s life and reduces treatment costs.
What is mammography and how is it done?
Mammography is an X-ray examination with high specificity for detecting changes in the breast. Mammography uses small doses of radiation to obtain a mammographic image.
Performing mammography as a method involves imaging the breasts, during which two images are taken, in two directions, of each breast.
What is breast cancer?
Breast cancer is a malignant change that occurs when normal cells begin to divide and multiply uncontrollably and destroy the surrounding healthy breast tissue, and later other organs.
Additional risk factors for breast cancer occur in women who:
Have a family history of this disease, namely a mother or 2 or more women in the family;
Had their first menstruation before 12 years of age, and their last menstruation over the age of 55;
Have not given birth or had their first birth after the age of 35;
Have used hormone therapy, alcohol or tobacco for a long time;
Are overweight;
Are not physically active.
However, breast cancer is not always associated with the above risk factors, but occurs in women who do not have any of them and is a random disease.
Women aged 40-69 who are without symptoms of breast cancer and who have not had a mammogram in the last two years can apply.
The screening mammography examination according to the Screening Program for Early Detection of Breast Cancer is FREE.
Screening program for early detection of breast cancer
The policy of the Ministry of Health is to care for the health of all citizens. A special emphasis for years has been on preventive activities within the framework of the Program for Early Detection of Malignant Diseases, which includes breast cancer screening.
How is it recognized?
A new lump in the breast;
Sores on the nipple of the breast that are not related to breastfeeding;
Changes in the color, size or shape of the breast, redness, swelling and thickening of the skin;
Retraction of the nipple or skin of the breast;
Discharge from the nipple that is not breast milk.
Regular mammographic examinations allow the detection of breast cancer at an early stage, and early detection, i.e. screening, is key to successful treatment.
